OVERVIEW
My Reader’s Edge is a reading program based on the Barton Reading & Spelling System which provides training that children and adults with dyslexia (or a learning disability) need in order to better recognize, understand and retain what they read. It uses a structured literacy program that is Orton-Gillingham influenced- which means it is a multi-sensory, direct, explicit, structured and sequential intense intervention reading program which produces measurable improved results. With this system I can equip struggling students to better process and understand the information that they receive, and help give them a reading advantage. For more information about the Barton Reading & Spelling System, go to www.bartonreading.com.
This is a one to one reading tutoring program. Giving a learner specific and focussed time is critical for their success. That is why great learning is surrounded by lots of commitment. This is especially the case when learners need to go over and above regular school hours to achieve their dreams. Parents who support their learners know the kind of commitment needed to open new opportunities, stay sharp or even catch up. I have dedicated my life to helping children fall in love with life-long learning through a loving, structured and innovative environment.
Here is an overview of what this tutoring program looks like in a learner’s and family’s life:
- An orientation session between myself and a learner’s parent to explain and discuss expectations and scheduling. Normally, a learner needs two sessions per week.
- An initial testing (Barton Student Screening) of the learner to determine if this program will be helpful.
- Signing the tutoring contract.
- A 30 day follow-up discussion between myself and the learner’s parent. Often, a parent has follow-up questions about tutoring or expectations.
- A 3 month progress report follow-up.
EXPECTATIONS
In order to facilitate the environment an advancing reader needs, MyReadersEdge has the following requirements:
- Be at least 5 years old and in Kindergarten.
- Speak and comprehend English.
- Must pass the Barton Student Screening.
- Tutoring would begin as soon as the student has been given the screening by the tutor. The tutoring takes place on a consistent basis for at least 2 nights a week for approximately 2 years, depending on how quickly your child moves through the levels.
- A commitment to stay with the program to at least a Level 5 would be in the best interest of your child. After Level 5, which takes about 15 months, you can re-evaluate if this is working for your child and how it’s affecting his/her reading. Usually the program speaks for itself and you will want to continue the program. If your child continues the program to a Level 10, they will be at a 9th-10th grade reading level. Note: There are 10 Levels. Levels 1 and 2 are approximately 2-3 weeks each. Levels 3-6 are about 10 weeks each.
- Every minute we are with your child counts. It’s important to use every minute effectively. Please have your child fed, watered and have gone to the restroom before they start. No food or drinks are allowed in the tutoring area. Your child may bring a secured water bottle and have it on the floor beside them.
- Please drop off and pick up your child at the agreed upon time.
- We will share a list of dates we are closed, due to holidays and school functions. We will allow for family vacations with advance notice given and sick days. If either your child is sick, please call your tutor in advance or ASAP if your child is ill that day. Otherwise, the parent will be charged if a 24 hour notice is not given.
- Tutoring occurs at 301 North Union, Fergus Falls, MN.
Note: There are 10 Levels. Levels 1 and 2 are approximately 2-3 weeks each. Levels 3-6 are about 10 weeks each.
